December 24, 2008 Chatsworth train crash victims file lawsuit against companies, engineer

Several victims of the Chatsworth train accident have filed a lawsuit against the driver of the train and the two companies that employed him. The negligence suit against Veolia Transportation Services, its subsidiary Connex and the estate of engineer Robert Sanchez was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by four victims who were injured in the Chatsworth train wreck and the mother of a passenger who was killed in the accident. A judge in California has approved a $48 million verdict awarded by the jury in a lawsuit filed by a injured railroad worker against his former employer. The verdict in Eric Doi’s lawsuit against the Union Pacific Railroad Company is the largest ever awarded under the Federal Employees Liability Act, which protects railroad workers who are injured on the job. One month after the deadly Chatsworth train crash, Metrolink has filed a train accident lawsuit against the company that provides the engineers that operate its trains. The engineer driving the Metrolink train involved in the accident is believed to have been sending and receiving text messages just seconds before it collided with an oncoming freight train. September 19, 2008 Calif. railroad board bans cell phones for train workers

The regulatory board in charge of California’s railroads has issued a temporary ban on the use of cell phones by anyone who is operating a moving train. The ban came in response to last week’s Chatsworth train crash, which investigators suspect happened just minutes after the engineer controlling the train was sending text messages from its cabin. September 18, 2008 Engineer was texting on the job before Chatsworth train crash

Federal officials investigating last week’s train crash in Chatsworth have confirmed that the engineer operating the commuter train involved in the crash was text messaging at work on the day of the accident. At least 25 people were killed and more than 130 injured when a Metrolink commuter train collided head on with a freight train traveling on the same track. Read more...
