The regulatory board in charge of California’s railroads has issued a temporary ban on the use of cell phones by anyone who is operating a moving train. The ban came in response to last week’s Chatsworth train crash, which investigators suspect happened just minutes after the engineer controlling the train was sending text messages from its cabin.

Federal officials investigating last week’s train crash in Chatsworth have confirmed that the engineer operating the commuter train involved in the crash was text messaging at work on the day of the accident. At least 25 people were killed and more than 130 injured when a Metrolink commuter train collided head on with a freight train traveling on the same track.

A jury in Maryland has awarded eight railroad workers a total of $19.3 million in their railroad injury lawsuit against CSX Transportation Inc. The lawsuit alleged that dangerous working conditions at the CSX rail yard caused all eight of the victims to develop serious lower body injuries.
